Dana, I met the RIO boys in 1992 in Portsmouth Ohio. I was the assistant Promoter with Mike Shalit and Metro Entertainment Group and again in 1993 when we had Radney Foster open up for you guys in Portsmouth, Ohio. My Brother has never forgotten when I allowed him at 13 years old to join you guys for a snack after the show. Diamond Rio is the best band ever and I have a Son that is 17 years old with Autism and he was raised on Diamond Rio’s music and matter of fact, he has the CD playing right now. Pretty much a everyday thing, but the music calms him and he enjoys it. Thanks for the memories that will live forever.

Dear Dana:
On your show on WSM all about Marty Robbins you played “El Paso” & “El Paso City”.
Two great songs but you forgot the third song about El Paso ,”Felina”. “Felina” a song by Marty Robbins is about the girl in “El Paso” and is the longest of the three. “Felina” is written from her view point. “Felina” runs over 8 minutes.
I really enjoy your show and all of the shows on WSM. Long live traditional country music. I know, I know, New Year’s Eve is far away now and you might not be interested in it anymore at this time of the year. But as after some weeks of springtime weather just now winter time has come back to us here in Switzerland I’m just in the mood to tell you about New Year’s Eve 2010 in my family in Switzerland. Oh, you don’t know where this funny little nation is? Well, don’t confuse it with Sweden, which lots of people do around the globe. It’s just this tiny little spot in the middle of Europe where girls are called Heidi, where nobody has to rob banks because they own them, where natives refuse to eat anything other than cheese or chocolate and where everybody does the yodeling all day through because they don’t have anything better to do…
New Year’s Eve: During daytime we clean our home to get rid of all the old year’s stuff we don’t use anymore. As soon as dusk comes, all of us (our two kids 11 & 14) set off for a 1 hour’s walk around a small swimming lake with our lanterns. That’s very romantic, especially when there is full moon, which was the case in 2009. After coming home, we cook our favorite fondue (not with cheese actually but with vegetable stock, in which everybody cooks his own little meat pieces right at the table). After dinner we spend the hours till midnight with playing different board or card games and by reading fun oracles like e.g. the Smarties-Oracle (Smarties = coloured chocolate drops)or the Jelly-Bear-Oracle.
Half an hour to midnight music starts to sound from the nearby church bell tower. Two trumpet players play classical Christmas Carols for the whole village. After this it’s (except for the fireworks, you can hear all over the place) just quiet for a while. A few minutes before midnight the church bells ring the old year out, followed by the twelve bell rings for each hour of midnight. It’s time to open a bottle of sparkling wine. And then it’s there, the New Year. We kiss and sip at our glasses and send tons of sms- or e-mail-messages to our dear ones. We normally ring our parents and wish them the best we can for the new year. That’s it, our personal New Year’s Eve in a small village in funny old Switzerland.

Hey Dana, Happy New Year to you! I had a nice 2010 but I’m ready to have my web design degree in May this year and see what happens for me. I used to play Farmville but I quit, I try to put important stuff first like class work or spending time w/ family.

I usually stay home for New Year’s Eve and I did last night after we were walloped with double blizzards, wouldn’t have gone 2 blocks away for a concert if there was one. I drank my Arbor Mist wine at home & hung out watching tv with my Mom & brother then I got online, then I went back downstairs to ring in the new year with more wine & Mom. The only New Year’s Eve I was out late was Dec 31, 2002 for a Kenny Chesney show in Nashville. Well I’m off to bed for the night, have a bunch of things to do tomorrow and packages to collect on Monday when they arrive.

Your right we do pass up comments on website or I do most times. I did like you note very good.

I don’t think I was the 1 bad comment the shows I’ve listen to all have been very good and I’ve enjoyed very much.

The one I just listened too with Jimmy was very funny and enlighting. I’ve always love Diamond Rio music and always well it’s been sometimes written/song JUST for me. NOT really but when I hear songs that is what I have thought because OH MY I’m going though that right know.

The Reason CD was the same way. The book was wonderful to read, guess we all have gone though alot in the years as artist and fans. Still a fan it’s the music. Talking to the fans after the shows is wonderful you guys ROCK. God has been good to all.

Can’t wait to hear ‘This is my Life’ on country radio I just LOVE that song.. Because guess what.. ‘this is my Life’ God is there for me/us always.

Hey Dana,
My wife and I have been Diamond Rio fans for years and I’ve been on you’re site most of the evening pokin’ around when I should’ve been working but I think it’s really cool!!!! Thank you so much sharing all the great “stuff”. I’ll be checking in regular. I just finished listening to your interview with Pete Fisher. I thought you might be interested to hear how I met Pete and how music can affect our lives.

One of the favorite memories my wife and I have of our boys, who are grown now, is a video we filmed back in the late eighties when the boys were about 5 and 8 years old. They are dancing to the song “Same Ole Love” written by Chris Austin and sung by Ricky Skaggs.
Fast forward 20 years to January of 2009 when we had a bad ice storm here in Kentucky. It really hit our area hard and we were pretty depressed after the ice had melted. The trees were so broken and damaged it looked like a bomb went off every where you looked. Anyway, We had no electricity for weeks but got hooked up on a generator and was able to get the internet. My wife came across the Merlefest website and the Chris Austin Songwriting Contest. I’m a songwriter so she suggested I enter. I hate contest so at first I refused but she kept on until I said what else could go wrong referring to the ice storm. Long story short I won the country division and I met Dan Keen from ASCAP at Merlefest. When he got back to Nashville he called Pete who was gracious enough to invite me and my wife Lori backstage as his guest. I’m just a carpenter from Kentucky and Pete is a very busy man but he invited us into his office then gave us a tour of backstage, introduced us to many Opry members and told us to make ourselves at home. We were of course in awe of the Opry legends. Pete really made it a night to remember. We were sitting on the church pews behind the band that night when Charlie Daniels walked out of the audience and asked Montgomery Gentry to join the Opry. What a memory. I couldn’t help but think about Chris Austin and two little boys dancing in a trailer in Kentucky and how the music had led us all to that moment. Sorry to be so long but I’m sure Pete does lots of things like that without tooting his own horn so I’m glad I can at least tell someone that knows him what great guy he is.

I thought I heard after the ACMs that a different crew (one from Nashville) was responsible for the probs you have mentioned in this blog. That it was not the usual crew who would have probably made sure these things did not happen…or for as long as it took to fix Ronnie’s mic.

Dana: It has been an unusual weekend where I have been working on home remodeling projects while my wife Robin and daughter Morgan are visiting Robin’s Mom. So to keep me company I pulled up your past shows that I have not been able to listen to because of my crazy schedule. You produce the most interesting and entertaining shows in the country music industry! I must have listened to six hours or so of your past shows. Between shows I would pop over to the satellite radio but quickly became tired of the same old stuff and would always come back to your shows until I had listened to them all. Thanks Dana! You cleared up a lot of questions I have had about these awards shows. I felt like a lot of it was out of the artists control from what i’ve heard or been told awhile back! But it was good to hear it again to restore my faith in some of these artists. My biggest problem with these shows these days is… Diamond Rio isn’t there!!! Lost interest when you guys weren’t being nominated! Miss you guys! and….still lovin the podcasts!!

Oh man..this was sweet!!! I have been a big fan of Steve Warners for years, (along with Diamond Rio of course), and really enjoyed this interview. It’s great to hear the stories behind the songs. I especially enjoyed Steve playing acoustic during this interview. When you don’t hear from an artist for awhile, you wonder what they are up to. It’s good to know that Steve is still playing and singing. I’ll be looking for his new cd!

Great Show…I spent some time with Joe when the Oaks did some charity work in Dallas many years ago. Wonderful guy….we went to a Rangers’ game and then over to Billy Bobs…He was great with people and truly an ambassador for country music…

Good Gravy! One question…how did Gene hold up through this? My wife and I have been friends with Restless Heart for over 20 years and spend time with them when they are in our area. They have always been so kind to us and to whomever we take to their shows with us. When we first met them, we did not have any children…now our sons are 18 and 15….and both love music. We saw Restless Heart and Diamond Rio together last year…and I hope you guys tour together in the future. I makes for a great evening…….

Hey Dana- Just wanted to thank you for the most beautiful memories ever!!!! From Bubba Hyde (or better known to my kids as the punishment song) to (as my kids call it) The Cow song…
One day, the kids and I decided to try a new church and on our way to the church the cow song came on and wouldn’t you know there was a cow on the road-The kids tore up the song and by the time we got to church we all had tears in our eyes from laughing. And there are many more stories from where that camew from so again, I THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Its All in Your Head…..classic….If i remember correctly, Jimmy had hurt his ankle playing racquetball or something, thats why he’s just kinda propped up in a corner groovin’ out those Rio guitar licks…….My favorite Rio video moment is at the end of the In a Week Or Two video…..”It’s time to get goin’……I swear” !! Wow! wow! wow!
I had a similar experience with American! 4 gate changes in 2 hours! BUt….they were all in the C area! Still made my flight too but there was NO bad weather! The pilot told us the plane we were supposed to take was broke! Broke?? He really said Broke when referring to an airplane?!?! Go figure! Glad you guys made it back safe and sound…….and had time to cool off on the ride home! Bless your heart! xo

Oh Dana I’m so SO SO Sorry you missed my post about DELTA NOT TO FLY WITH THEM….. 3 years ago they they being Delta WANTED to LEAVE me in SLC. I would have driven but I would have missed WORK about 3 days and the test I had to take on that monday. SO I KNOW what you guys went though. Yes Fly Southwest even it if is GA seating you WILL get where your going. On my flight from SLC 3 years ago the plane was coming in FROM Atlanta had wing problem. OK THEN I’ll give them that but don’t you think they would have BACK UP PLANES????? You would think right? Atlanta HAD BAD weather going out and coming back. I was to be on NON STOP to SLC so they CHANGED my flight without me knowing it which started OUT BAD. Any do yourselves a favor and just FLY Southwest they don’t charge for Bags EITHER..

Glad your home and safe from SLC/NV over the weekend.

I feel for you, brother. One time…when my wife was pregnant with our first son…the American Airlines pilots held some sort of “cal in sick protest” and we wound up in DFW for nine hours. Once our plane was off the ground a pilot came by and had something to say so I let him have it pretty good. Needless to say, the FAA boys were waiting when the plane landed in Philly and took me into this little room. I thought I was going to jail. The guy said, ” I understand how you feel…I even AGREE with what you said…but I can’t have arguments on my airplanes…
Now, get out of here”…….

I read that in the book about the tribute to Merle Haggard.I bet that was fantastic for yall to be able to do that with him.When I first heard the song play my kids ask who was that singing I said that is Diamond Rio I said I could hear Marty’s voice and you just can’t mistake his voice and when yours and Gene’s join in the Merle song You three just have what it takes. Great Song by the way you really did it justice.
I have never heard this song of Keith Whitley’s that yall sang before but you sure did a Great job of it as always.
You did a great job with the Disney one to for a Male Group I have always heard Ladies sing it but Diamond Rio don’t do any bad song’s.<3

The Eagles WOW I grew up listening to them first love their music.

Marty does sound really young in Pick Me Up! He really had a lot more of that classic country twang then, too I love hearing these songs from the beginning of your career and comparing them to the newer ones.
